Cake Pan Preparation
3. DIY NON-STICK PAN RELEASE GEL
If you are worried about “chemicals” in the commercial non-stick spray but still want to get the job done easily, you can make your own non-stick gel. A recipe I came across while looking for an alternative, suggested 1:1:1 of shortening, flour, and oil. When I tried this it felt too goopy. Reducing the flour quantity worked better in creating an even smooth coat. This easy to make recipe efficiently gets the job done in half the time… at a low cost! Now at your disposal 🙂
You will need…
Ingredients
- 1 cup Margarine/shortening
- 1 cup Light vegetable oil (I use Canola)
- 150g All purpose flour
Equipment & Utensils
- Mixing bowl
- Hand mixer or whisk
- Pastry brush
Method
- Put the flour in a bowl and create a dip in the center. Pour the oil in.
- Use the hand mixer and mix until it forms a smooth blend.
- Add the shortening and continue mixing.
- Your mix will appear lumpy at the beginning, It takes about 5-7 minutes for it to become a uniform mix.
Your non-stick pan release gel is ready to use ! Brush a double coat (I do a double coat just to make sure!) on the bottom, and for the sides brush to about half the height of your cake pan. Pour in cake batter and proceed with baking.
Store the rest of the gel in an airtight glass container and refrigerate until next use.

Hello Reshma! It stays for weeks in the fridge. I go through it pretty fast, so lets say 2 months and it’s still good 🙂
